Jeb Bush defunded Planned Parenthood and now Florida is one of the worst states for women’s health
In 2001, Gov. Jeb Bush cut $302,843 for family planning services for poor women through Planned Parenthood in Florida. Now, 25% of women in Florida are uninsured. More than 20% of women in Florida report being in fair or poor health. 20% of Floridian women have no access to a personal doctor or health care provider. And the stats get only more depressing from there.
Story time: I have several lumps in my breasts. Because of our current governor (Voldemort himself, Rick Scott) if you fall into the unfortunate category of not-making enough money and your employer doesn’t provide healthcare to part time workers, you “get” a legal exemption from not having health insurance from the ACA. It was fucking terrible. To get my breasts checked, for the very real possibility of me having breast cancer (it runs in my family), I would have had to pay a thousand dollars.
Planned Parenthood did the screenings for me for less than $30, which they let me pay in installments. There were other local health centers in my area, none anywhere near as affordable as PP. The lumps in my breasts were benign, but the week leading to my screening was one long anxiety attack, because I thought I had cancer. I couldn’t eat. I couldn’t sleep.
At that same screening they set me up with birth control that would moderate the pain levels for my period, and gave me free condoms to ensure I had all my bases covered in regards to my sex life.
Planned Parenthood allowed me to have a clear conscience health wise so that I could keep succeeding in school, and working at my two jobs. Planned Parenthood contributed in allowing me to be a more educated part of my community, and a person who actively contributed to the American economy.
That, among many other reasons, is why I firmly stand with Planned Parenthood.
Republicans are disgusting. Their ‘war on women’ has zero morality, and is based on control and oppression.
